Who's Right?

Mrs. Gearhart and Mrs. Harris were both trying to solve this problem.

8 + 4 x 3 ÷ 6
Mrs. Gearhart thinks the answer is 6.  Mrs. Harris believes the answer is 10.  Who do you think is correct?  What mistake was made with the incorrect answer?  Write your response in complete sentences.  Write your names, or initials, at the end of the post so we can discuss later in class.

  1. I think that Mrs.Harris is correct because first you 4x3=12 next you 12/6=2 then you add 8+2=10 and then why the answer is ten. LT

    1. I agree and disagree because mrs. Harris is correct but you didn't tell why mrs gearhart was right

    2. i agree with you because Mrs. Harris is also following the order of operations by each step.

  2. mrs.Harris is right and I know this by eight plus four times three divided by 6 and then were going to multiply three times four and get twelve and divide twelve with six and that equals two plus eight and u get ten so mrs.harris is right . this was written by Sophie and Gabi

    1. Why did you decide to multiply 4 x 3 first instead of add 8 + 4? Did you have a special reason?

  3. Mrs. Harris is right because 8 + 4 x 3 / 6 there is multiplication and division so you do that first and work left to right and you do 4 x 3 =12 and then 12 / 6 = 2. Then there is addition so you do 8 + 2 = 10. Hunter

  4. I think Mrs.Harris is right because 4x3=12 and 12 divided by 6 equal 2 and 8+2=10 so there fore i think Mrs.Harris is right.-Joshlyn

  5. Mrs.Harris is correct because 8+4=12 and 12 divided by 6=2 then add 8+2=10 so Mrs.Harris is right!

    1. 1. Where did the 3 go? 2. You used the 8 twice when there is only one 8. 3. You are supposed to do division before you add. 4. You added twice when there is only one addition sign. 5. There is multiplication in the expression but you did not do any multiplication. Hunter

  6. mrs.Harris is right because i know that 3 times 4=12 and 12 divided by 6=2 and 2+8=10. mrs.Gearhart is wrong because she started at 8+4=12 but she should of started at 3 times 4=12

  7. Mrs.Harris is correct it is 10 and this is how I did it, sense PEDMAS sais you have to do multiplication and division before you do addition and subtraction so you go left to right in the multiplication and division and then the addition and I did the proplem and got 10 ZJ

    2. I agree with you because how you used PEDMAS you explained it very good so we can understand.-JS/EH

    3. I agree because using PEMDAS is a good to us but you need to use 4x3 or 15-6 to git the anwer.

    4. What exactly is PEMDAS? Is it a math term, or is it used to help you do something else?

  8. Mrs. Harrais is correct because if we use the acronym P.E.M.D.A.S ti tells us that we have to do the multiplication than the division then the addition.
Mrs. Gearheat porbly did them out of order.

  9. i think mrs.harris is right because 8+4=12 and 3 divided by
    6=2 so 12-2=10 Grayson

    1. i agree with your answer i disagree with the way you did it grayson because you haft to do multiplication
first then when you get the answer you divide then you add
and that is how you do it

  10. mrs. Harris is correct because in PEMDAS multiplication and division come before addition and subtraction so first we multiplied 4 times 3 and got 12 then we divided twelve by 6 and got 2 then we added 8 and got 10.

    1. What do you mean "in PEMDAS"? Is this something that you use only at certain times in math or is it needed all the time? How do I know WHEN to use this PEMDAS thing? What does that even mean?

    3. hello mrs.caine it is gianna and jacee and we would like to clarify your question PEMDAS is really just the order of oporation, steeps to help us solve a problem

  11. 4x3=12/6=2+8=10 so mrs.Harris is right because using pemdas mrs. Harris would be right. Without using pemdas and going left to right like 8+4=12x3=36/6=6 so in one case mrs.gearhart is right.DJ Nathan derek

  12. Mrs.Harris is right because on the equation 4x3=12 12 divided by 6 is 2 and 2+8=10

  13. We found that Ms.Harris was right because 4x3=12 and 12 divided by 6=2 and 8+2=10 and Ms.Harris said the problem equals 10 so she got it right

    1. Hold on a minute ELY and CJC.... Can you explain WHY you waited until the very end to add the 8. It was the very first thing in the expression but you waited to do it until last. WHY??? Is there some mathematical reason? Was it a random decision? Does it really even matter when I add the 8?

    2. it wouldnt matter if you add the 8 first or last it would still be the right answer im sure it was random

      Delete
    3. It matters because PEMDAS. PEMDAS is an acronym. Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication/Division, and Addition/Subtraction. So first they did 4x3=12. Then they did 12/6=2. And then they added the 8 and got 10.

    4. That was Michael

      Delete
    5. The reason they did that was because they were following PEMDAS. In PEMDAS Multiplication and division come before addition and subtraction that is why they added the 8 last.

  14. This is what I did...
    G:6
    H:10
    8 + 4 x 3 divided by 6
    4 x 3 = 12 divided by 6 = 8
    8 + 2 = 10
Mrs. Harris is right because she followed the order of operations.
